Description
The Beal Cottageonce the home of Professor George Beal, longtime chair of the University of Kansas Architecture Department and aT aliesin Fellow. Beal lived, worked, and studied under the legendary Frank Lloyd Wright at both Taliesin, Wright's iconic Wisconsin estate, and Taliesin West in Arizona. Beal's architectural legacy lives on in Lawrence through his design of the Beal-Charlton Houseconsidered the city's first modern residence inspired by Wright's Usonian principles. The Beal-Charlton House became listed on the National Historic Registry in 2015 and is just up the street from the cottage on the 1600 block of Indiana street in the University Place neighborhood. Local loresupported by credible accountssuggests that Frank Lloyd Wright himself stayed at the Beal Cottage on several occasions. As Wright made seasonal drives between Taliesin and Taliesin West, it's said he and his family would pause their journey here at 1710 Indiana Street, welcomed by the Beals into this cozy retreat. In 2023, the home was acquired as part of a six-property portfolio within the University Place neighborhood. Under the new ownership, each home has been thoughtfully restored from years of neglect. After the initial renovation, the current owner purchased the home in 2024 and took it to the next level by transforming it into the showpiece that it is today. No attention to detail was spared while staying true to the original character of the home. A long list of improvements include period specific light fixtures, a total kitchen facelift, revamped bathroom, a wood deck and bamboo fence, and improvements to the underground drainage system on the North side of the home. Every detail was carefully considered, resulting in a home that feels both elegant and approachablesimple, charming, and steeped in architectural heritage.
